You need to have a mentor to be a mentor!
What is the importance of having a mentor and how can it help you to succeed?
Today I will highlight how a mentor can make all of the difference to your success in life and in business.
A mentor is a person you look up to and can provide you with a valuable insight in your life and business.
Usually they listen to you and provide valuable advice.
I am taken back to my classroom days as I begin to write this post.
You see I guess I never felt comfortable with just providing children and students with a whole pile of facts and figures.
I was always looking to see how I could develop each students talents. What is that set them apart to everybody else and how could we use this in a positive way. This had a two fold effect. The student would relish in confidence and self esteem. The second being that the whole class and the teacher would benefit.
One story that comes to mind is about a particularly challenging student. He preferred the rough and tumble of the playground rather than to sit and learn. Of course he was very outgoing and extremely popular with all his classmates.
The challenge came when you had to help him learn his work. No he definitely was not interested in this and he made life difficult for the teacher me and the rest of the class.
Well I recall a time when he became a mentor for everybody in the class. You see the school always had a special performance during the year.
Student mentors grade’s performance.
This became the vehicle for me to raise my challenging student’s self esteem. You see this particular student was an excellent tap dancer. He had won many awards and was well on his way to stardom. The logical responsibility to provide this student was to have him coordinate our performance. So he became the classes mentor and choreographed the whole performance with some guidance from his teacher. Needles to say his whole outlook on school life changed.
The point I am trying to make here is that mentoring can bring out the best in everybody and we are all learning from each other all of the time.
Keeping an open mind.
When we keep an open mind and look for opportunities to build people up through their strengths then the power of mentoring can be felt by everybody. You see this says to your team or clients that I value what you have to offer to me and the rest of the team.
This is a powerful empowering message.
